UK Launches AI Taskforce Under Lord Vallance to Put AI at the Cabinet Table

The UK government has placed artificial intelligence at the centre of government decision making with the launch of a new AI Taskforce, chaired by Lord Vallance. The unit is designed to accelerate AI adoption across government, transform public services and drive economic growth nationwide.

The government has explicitly modelled the new unit on the Vaccines Taskforce, the focused team credited with overseeing the UK's rapid Covid 19 vaccination rollout. The hope is that a similarly structured team, with direct accountability to the Prime Minister, can deliver comparable results for AI adoption. The Taskforce reports to Cabinet Secretary Antonia Romeo and newly appointed AI Minister Kanishka Narayan, while Lord Vallance himself reports directly to the Prime Minister.

A structural signal, not just a new job title

The Taskforce sits within the newly created Office for the Prime Minister and Cabinet, alongside Number 10, Number 10 North and core Cabinet Office functions, working closely with First Secretary of State Louise Haigh. Responsibility for the UK's existing AI Security Institute has also moved into this same office, bringing the government's AI safety and security capability structurally closer to the centre of decision making rather than leaving it distributed across separate departments.

That consolidation reflects a pattern now visible across several governments this year. Rather than treating AI policy as one portfolio scattered among departments, a number of administrations have moved to centralise AI coordination directly within the office of the head of government, a design choice intended to cut through departmental silos and speed up coordinated decision making.

Leadership built on scientific credibility and delivery record

Lord Vallance served as the UK Government's Chief Scientific Adviser between 2018 and 2023, providing independent scientific guidance through some of the country's most difficult recent periods, and remains best known for leading the Vaccines Taskforce during the pandemic. He most recently served as Minister for Science, Innovation, Research and Nuclear, working across the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology and the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, before resigning that post ahead of this appointment.

AI Minister Kanishka Narayan framed the stakes in similarly ambitious terms. "AI is likely the most significant technology in human history," he said. "That is why it is now at the UK Cabinet's table, so we can reindustrialise with AI, secure our country, and support our public services." Narayan added that Vallance's combination of scientific expertise, government experience and delivery focus made him well suited to the role.

A second mandate alongside AI

Alongside chairing the AI Taskforce, Vallance will simultaneously chair the Oxford to Cambridge Growth Corridor, an initiative bringing together local authorities, universities and businesses to unlock innovation and remove barriers to growth across one of the UK's most significant innovation regions. Pairing the two roles under one leader suggests the government sees AI adoption and regional innovation economics as closely linked priorities rather than separate policy tracks, building on Vallance's earlier work as Ministerial Champion for the same growth corridor.

The UAE has taken a similar structural step by creating a federal AI and data authority to run agentic government under one roof, and the UK's decision to place both AI adoption and AI security responsibility directly under the Prime Minister's own office represents one of the more centralised structural models yet adopted by a major Western government, one that GCC policymakers tracking global AI governance approaches will likely study closely.

The creation of the Taskforce signals the UK government's intention to make artificial intelligence a central pillar of public sector reform, economic growth and national competitiveness in the years ahead, joining a growing list of governments restructuring their institutional approach to AI governance in 2026 rather than treating it as a matter for individual departments to manage independently.
